The Oregonian reports that 60,000 people are expected to attend this year’s Pride parade, and the city is throwing parties, brunches, and drag reading hours across town throughout the month. That moment in history is often described as the crux of the queer rights movement, and since then, LGBTQ people across the world see June as a celebration of queerness, often involving parades, dances, and parties.įifty years later, Portland has lost some of its gay bars, but Pride rages on. This month marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a series of violent protests between the New York queer community and police in response to a raid at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village.
